Green Tie Guys have begun stepping up for girls in our community
Join the Athena Initiative for a Girl Scout hackathon! Work with other teenagers to build your first website, then choose a beginner-friendly workshop to take your skills to the next level!
Everyone will make their personal website, and then have the option to choose between two workshops: creating a Blinky Board or developing an online game with Sprig. The day will include time on a computer, learning from other teens, and fun, unplugged brain breaks! No worries if you have no coding experience, because all workshops are beginner-friendly and organizers will help as needed.
All Girl Scouts: Build a Personal Website
Build your very own website from scratch! Learn HTML & CSS while creating a portfolio to show off your projects, hobbies, or anything you love.
Workshop 1: Blinky Board
Design a fun LED “blinky board” using KiCad. Learn circuits and layout and have fun with your design skills!
Workshop 2: Sprig Game Development
Make your own game with Sprig! Explore coding basics while designing characters, rules, and gameplay, and later you'll actually get to play it.
Girl Scouts will need to bring their own laptop. They will also need to have access to an email account during the event, and depending on their workshop, will need to create online accounts and/or install free software. Specific details will be provided in advance of the workshop. All workshops are part of Hack Club’s “You Ship, We Ship” (YSWS) program. Participants must finish their projects (with some kind original twist) and they will be given a reward!
This program is for Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors (grades 6-12). Girl Scouts will earn their Coding Basics and Coding Game Design badges. Badges can be purchased at the Badge & Sash or online. All Girl Scouts will also receive a fun patch, which will be provided at the workshop. Siblings and friends within the same age range are welcome to join; please include them in the registration. This is a drop-off program, but we'll need some Girl Scout Adults to stay on-site to maintain our safety ratio. Please register if you are able to stay. This workshop will be hosted at the Mableton Service Center in Mableton, GA.
Thanks to the support of the Athena Initiative, this program is FREE of charge! Athena collaborates with organizations like GitHub, SpaceX, and NCWIT, and in fall 2025 their Athena Award program got 1000 teens from underrepresented genders into tech.
