Green Tie Guys have begun stepping up for girls in our community
Each year on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, our country recognizes the great commitment and service of Dr. King. We invite troops, service units, and Juliette Girl Scouts and their families to participate in service or education projects, or a Girl Scout’s Own* ceremony, to recognize and continue the legacy of Dr. King and the many others in the civil rights movement in America. When Girl Scouts choose to honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a day of service, they put their Promise into action: “On my honor, I will try, To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law” If the Girl Scouts you work with have never thought of using art as a way to educate, MLK Day would be a great theme for any of these badges (girls may need your help in finding appropriate ways to share their message): * A Girl Scout’s Own Ceremony explores and celebrates the ideals and spirit of Girl Scouting. The theme is often the Girl Scout Promise, or a part of the Law, but the lives of inspiring people can also provide the theme. If you would like an electronic copy of Greater Atlanta’s “Scout’s Own Ceremonies” activity guide, please contact Margaret Paschal at paschalmargaret@gmail.com. (There is a sample Martin Luther King Day ceremony, but girls are encouraged to create their own.) |
