Memorial Day was originally known as
Decoration Day. The holiday began as a way to honor soldiers who
died in the Civil War, but the day now honors all U.S. veterans
who have sacrificed their lives. It is always observed on the
last Monday in May. Consider volunteering as a troop to lead or
participate in a ceremony to honor the day. As your troop takes some time this weekend or this month to enjoy the start of summer vacation, here are some good resources to help you recognize the day together: https://www.military.com/memorial-day/celebrating-memorial-day-with-children.html Learn more about Girl Scout flag ceremonies at https://www.girlscouts.org/en/about-girl-scouts/traditions/ceremonies.html#flag Memorial Day is one of the few days flags are ordered to fly at half-staff (until noon) then full-staff until sunset. |
