Celebrate the International Day of
the Girl Child with your Troop or Group! WHAT
IT IS: On the International Day of the Girl Child (IDGC)
the global community, including the World Association of Girl
Guides and Girl Scouts, comes together to celebrate the power
of girls and highlight, discuss, and take action to advance
the rights of and opportunities for girls everywhere. Every
year, Girl Scouts of the USA celebrates International Day of
the Girl Child with a special campaign created around the
annual theme; look for details at https://www.girlscouts.org/en/for-girls/think-globally.html
THE DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD 2024 THEME is “Digital
Generation,” and young people across the world are developing
a digital activism campaign, aiming to raise the diversity of
girls’ voices and their vision for a reimagined future. It
provides a platform for the global community to understand the
disadvantages girls face online.
INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD information and
activity ideas are available now on pages 26-28 of the Global
Action Days Toolkit, found in the Resources section of the
Volunteer Toolkit. By doing activities that celebrate the
International Day of the Girl Child, Girl Scouts are
completing one step toward earning the Global Action Days
patch. WHY WE CELEBRATE: We know that each
girl has the power to exercise her G.I.R.L. (Go-getter,
Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)™ potential. By supporting and
investing in girls, we can make the world a better place,
where girls can live free from gender violence; learn the
skills they need for the future they choose; and lead as a
generation of advocates for positive social change. (https://www.wagggs.org/en/blog/20200308ending-the-culture-of-gender-inequality/)
INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD is always on
October 11. If your Service Unit is thinking about offering an
International Day of the Girl Child virtual special event or
activities, get started now! In addition to the Global Action
Days Toolkit, WAGGGS has International Day of the Girl Child
resources your Girl Planning Team and their adult advisors can
use to plan their event. If you would like more information on
IDGC resources and activities, plus links to Girl Scout badges
and Journeys, please contact Global Action Volunteer Margaret
Paschal at paschalmargaret@gmail.com. Margaret can also help
