Celebrated since 1926, World Thinking Day is a day of international friendship. It is an opportunity to connect with our global sisterhood, speak out on issues that affect girls and young women, and support 10 million Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in 152 countries through contributions to the World Thinking Day Fund.

On International Day of the Girl 2020, WAGGGS (the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts) asked Girl Guides and Girl Scouts under 18 from 100 countries what issues they were most concerned about and what they wanted to change about the world. From this data, WAGGGS learned that the number one worry is the environment. And so, the World Thinking Day theme from 2022-2024 is “Our World, Our Future.”

This year’s WTD starts a three-year journey for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts to become environmentally conscious leaders. Each year we will build on this environmental theme and explore the links between the environment and other global concerns.

2022: OUR WORLD, OUR EQUAL FUTURE; THE ENVIRONMENT AND GENDER EQUALITY

Climate change and environmental degradation are threatening our world, and our future. To earn your World Thinking Day award, you will explore how girls and women are disproportionately affected by climate change, and make the Girl Scout Tree Promise (https://www.girlscouts.org/treepromise)

2023: OUR WORLD, OUR THRIVING FUTURE; THE ENVIRONMENT AND GLOBAL POVERTY

2024: OUR WORLD, OUR PEACEFUL FUTURE; THE ENVIRONMENT, PEACE AND SECURITY

What Do We Do On World Thinking Day?

● Be one in ten million as you celebrate World Thinking Day with your family, troop or Service Unit - and the world! Your celebration could be a special ceremony, an in-person or virtual event, or a Take Action Project that helps the environment. Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta has resources to help you! Contact Global Volunteer Margaret Paschal for more information or to request electronic copies of our resource and activity guides:

paschalmargaret@gmail.com

Be inspired by the history and impact of our global Movement! Do you know about Lord and Lady Baden-Powell? The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts? How Juliette Gordon Low helped make Guiding and Girl Scouting a global Movement? Do you know how the Girl Guides helped win World War II? How Girl Scouts in our own council made a difference in the world through their Gold Award projects? There’s so much to be inspired by!

● Connect with the worldwide sisterhood of Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting (connect means to join, link, or fasten together; unite or bind.)

One of the ways WAGGGS help Girl Scouts and Guides stay connected is through social media: their website, Facebook page, Blog, Instagram and Twitter! Start here: www.wagggs.org. Many of WAGGGS’ Member Organizations (countries) have Websites or Facebook pages; use your favorite search engine and search for “Girl Guides [name of country]” Another way we stay connected with our sister Guides and Girl scouts is through the World Centre: https://www.wagggs.org/en/our-world/world-centres/

Take action and speak out on issues we most care about by earning the World Thinking Day Award. To learn the steps needed, visit https://www.girlscouts.org/en/for-girls/think-globally/world-thinking-day.html The Activity Guides are also directly accessible to all troop leaders in the Volunteer Tool Kit. There are additional World Thinking Day activities for large or small groups in the Global Action Days Toolkit, found in the Resources section of the Volunteer Toolkit.

Make a difference by contributing to the World Thinking Day Fund. A tradition since 1932, the Fund helps support WAGGGS projects around the world. Donations are used wherever the need is greatest in our global Movement.
